How We Work
At the core of our work is a simple but powerful philosophy, friendship and support. Through tailored charitable services, we foster community, combat loneliness, and help individuals embrace a vibrant and connected retirement.
Our History
Our journey began with a visionary article, “A Pension Is Not Enough”, penned by Douglas Houghton MP in the early 1960s. The article shed light on the need for an organisation that could offer retired civil servants a space for companionship and shared experiences.
Inspired by this vision, J.P. Wolstenholme, General Secretary of The Civil Service Benevolent Fund, brought the idea to life. On April 9, 1965, the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship was founded, with its first branches opening in Guildford, Birmingham, and the Solent area.
This marked the beginning of a legacy built on friendship, community, and unwavering support.

- Freephone Advice Line: Our expert team provides valuable information, advice, and signposting to a network of supportive organisations, ensuring help is just a phone call away.
